F-250/F-350

New for 2002

Overview

The 2002 Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 pickups, which outsell both Chevrolet and Dodge in its class combined, extend their reputation as rugged, practical and capable vehicles with powertrain refinements, and interior upgrades designed to enhance comfort and convenience.

Design

The 2002 Super Duty F-250/350 models have added three new exterior colors: Arizona Beige Clearcoat Metallic; Sapphire Blue Clearcoat Metallic; and Dark Shadow Grey Clearcoat Metallic.

Super-Duty models offer the right power, payload and towing for most any vocation that customers require through Class 7. In fact, F-Series offers one-third more configurations in its class than its newest competitor.

A forward-fold feature on telescoping trailer tow mirrors is available on the XL and Lariat with manual glass and XLT and Lariat with power glass.

Packaging

Changes to Super Duty's class-leading interior have been made for comfort and convenience. New on the XLT and Lariat are seats with increased bolster height and shoulder width. A six-way power passenger's seat is standard on the Lariat Crew Cab models, adding more comfort on the ride. Also new is an improved lumbar support system, providing a greater range of adjustment.

Map pockets with integrated cup holders (for closed containers only) are standard on SuperCab rear doors, and a garage door opener and sunglasses bin is standard on the Lariat overhead console. Passenger's side grab handles are standard on all trim levels and the passenger's rear seating grab handles are standard on the Crew Cab.

A new instrument cluster with a transmission temperature gauge is standard on all models equipped with an automatic transmission.

Powertrains

Three engines are available on the Ford F-250/350. The standard 5.4L SOHC Triton V-8 is rated at 260 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft of torque. In 2001, the 5.4L was named one of Ward's Auto World's "Ten Best Engines" for the fifth year in a row.

The 7.3L Power StrokeTM turbo diesel V-8, the best-selling engine in its class - gas or diesel, produces 250 horsepower and 505 lb.-ft. of torque with the automatic transmission; or 275 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque when joined to the manual transmission.

The 6.8L SOHC Triton V-10 puts out 310 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 5.4L and 6.8L engines have been upgraded from five- to six-speed manual transmissions as standard.

Many F-250/350 buyers use their trucks to run auxiliary equipment, requiring a provision for power takeoff (PTO), Super Duty F-250 and F-350's six-speed manual transmission has a standard left-side PTO. A left-side PTO is also optional on the four-speed automatic.

When the vehicle is properly equipped it can tow 12,500 pounds, the highest conventional trailer towing of any pickup in its class. Adding a fifth wheel hitch increases the towing capacity up to 14,300 pounds.

Available on F-250/F-350 with either the 4x2 or 4x4 system are dual rear wheels that increase rear traction, improve towing stability and provide increased rear axle weight ratings. The optional limited-slip rear axle improves performance in low traction situations such as off-road driving or slick pavement.

The optional engine-block heater improves starting performance in cold weather.

Other option packages are a snowplow package, maximum front GAWR package, and a camper package. The optional shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive systems (either manual or electric) provide enhanced traction.

Safety and Security

F-Series Super Duty trucks are supplied with air bag supplemental restraint systems that protect occupants in frontal collisions. The front shoulder safety belts are adjustable to five different height positions for optimum comfort and position.

Also available are a remote keyless entry system, and auto locks and lamps for security and convenience. In addition, an F-Series feature, lacking on some competitor's models, is a locking tailgate.

Super Duty now offers "uptime-critical" parts ordering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with next day delivery 365 days a year.

F-350/450/550

Overview

The Super Duty F-Series Chassis Cabs are popular choices for industry use. The vehicle's strength, toughness and versatility meet the performance needs of just about any job.

Design and Style

Available for the first time in 2002 are SuperCab F-450 and F-550 models with a 162-inch wheelbase. New exterior colors options such as Arizona Beige Clearcoat Metallic, Sapphire Blue Clearcoat Metallic and dark Shadow Grey Clearcoat Metallic have been added for 2002.

Chassis Cab frame rails have an advantage in versatility - through-the-side rail fuel filler opening helps body builders make modifications and add bodies more efficiently.

Chassis Cab customers are offered multiple GVWR levels ranging from 9,900 lbs. (F-350) to 19,000 lbs. GVWR (F-550). Both 4x2 and 4x4 drive systems as well as single or dual rear wheel are available.

Packaging

The new interior color for the 2002 model year is Medium Flint. New updates for the XL and up are:

Powertrains

The F-350, F-450 and F-550 are offered with three different engines. The standard 5.4L SOHC Triton V-8 is rated at 260 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. In 2001, the 5.4L was named one of Ward's Auto World's "Ten Best Engines" for the fifth year in a row.

The 7.3L Power Stroke turbo diesel V-8 produces 250 horsepower and 505 horsepower and 505 lb.-ft. of torque with the automatic transmission, and 2175 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque when mated to a manual transmission. The engine is the best-selling in its class for the last five years.

The 6.8L SOHC Triton V-10 puts out 310 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. of torque. For 2002, the 6.8L engine now has improved performance and shift feel.

All 2002 5.4L and 6.8L engines have been upgraded from a standard five-speed to a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Super Duty's standard six-speed manual transmission has a standard left-side PTO. A left-side PTO is optional on the 4-speed automatic transmission.

Ride and Handling

Power adjustable accelerator and brake pedals are available with the automatic transmission on the XLT and Lariat.

The vehicle features a standard front monobeam with leaf springs, with available heavy service suspension, and available GAWR package. The available snowplow package adds versatility

The F-Series have a standard manual and available electric shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system (on F-350 models). The vehicles also have an available limited-slip rear axle that improves performance in off-road driving situations.

Super Duty F-350/450/550 Chassis Cabs have a maximum towing capacity of 21,500 pounds. The vehicles now offer expanded fuel capacity combining the 40-gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank and the 19-gallon mid-ship fuel tank available on all 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel engine equipped models.

Safety and Security

Safety and security features included in the Super Duty F-350-550 Chassis Cabs include second-generation air bags for the driver and right front passenger.

Fog lamps on the Lariat provide enhanced visibility in inclement weather.

The Aero Jewel-effect headlamps are standard on XLT and Lariat models and the sealed-beam halogen lamps are standard on the XL models. Advance features are autolocks, autolamps and the remote keyless entry system.

New for 2002, all Super Duty customers will now benefit from "uptime-critical" parts ordering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with next day delivery 365 days a year.

F-650/F-750

New for 2002

• Standard powertrain is the Cummins 210 horsepower diesel with an Allison AT 545 automatic transmission
• Available F-750 Tractor Package, built for beverage industry and single axle applications

Overview

The 2002 Ford Super Duty F-650 and F-750 are tough, hard-working commercial trucks designed to appeal to businesses and municipalities. Super Duty F-650 and F-750 models deliver modern styling and many comfort and convenience features customers may not expect in a commercial truck of this size.

Design

Three different cab styles, Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab are available from the factory, eliminating the need for a modification company to customize the cab at substantial additional expense. The distinctive front-end treatment and the high-cab mount and sloping hood of the vehicles conveys strength and a rugged appeal distinguishing the F-650/750 models from the rest of the Super Duty lineup.

Ford's Super Duty F-650 and F-750 also have five different GVWRs to choose from. The F-650 is available with 22K, 24.5K and 26K GVWRs. All three GVWRs are available with a low-profile package. F-750 features two available GVWRs, 30K and 33K. The 33K is offered with an available reinforced 9.5-inch frame option with 28.7-inch section modules. This frame is designed especially for crane and boom applications.

Packaging

A tractor is the power unit of a tractor-trailer combination. F-750 models with 33K GVWRs are now available with a Tractor Package that allows a trailer (where cargo rests) to be hooked and pulled. Result: Ford is back in the popular beverage vocation and other vocations.

Powertrains

Super Duty F-650 and F-750 allow customers to customize the trucks to fit their needs. The vehicles have three different diesel engines available with a wide variety of horsepower choices. Buyers have a choice of 6 manual and 5 automatic transmissions.

An Allison AT 545 automatic transmission with Cummins 210 horsepower diesel engine is now the standard powertrain on models up to 33K. The Caterpillar 3126B is standard on 33K models.

The 7.3L Ford Power StrokeTM turbo diesel can be coupled with a four-speed Allison automatic transmission, or a five-, six-, or seven-speed manual. The engine is rated at 210 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,500 rpm. All three diesels are available with the AT 545. Manual transmissions on these engines can be ordered with five, six or seven speeds.

Horsepower ratings up to 260 with 660 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,300 rpm are available with the Cummins 5.9L diesel engine. An engine block heater helps maintain engine-start temperature for quick and easy cold-weather starts.

The F-650 and F-750 have a wide range of standard and optional axles. Front axle ratings range from 7,000 pounds to 12,000 pounds, with rear axle ratings ranging from 14,500 pounds to 23,000 pounds. Rear axle ratios range from 3.91 to 6.83.

The 3.9 ratio axle is a recent addition, and provides a higher top speed, better fuel economy and excellent overall performance, especially for trucks logging a lot of miles on the open road.

The standard fuel tank on Super Duty F-650/750 is 50-gallon steel tank with an integral step, mounted on the right side under the door. Dual fuel tanks are available on all models.

Ride and Handling

Ford's F-650 and F-750 suspension packages offer standard front and rear leaf springs. An optional package includes front stabilizer bar, four-leaf auxiliary rear springs and rear double-action gas-filled shock absorbers.

Safety and security

The F-650/750 has a heavy-duty braking system. The high-efficiency hydraulic brake system is standard on 26K and 30K GVWR models. The air drum brake system is standard on 33K GVWR models and optional on others.

Both the hydraulic and the air drum brake system incorporate a standard four-wheel Antilock Braking System (ABS) that's designed to eliminate wheel lockup in many severe braking situations.

The F-650 and F-750 have three-point lap/shoulder safety belts that provide passenger protection in the event of a collision.
