It keeps the moisture and dirt from getting to the back side of the speakers. Plus, it acts somewhat like a box does for a subwoofer. Since it encloses and seals the back of the speakers, you get a little better bass out of the door speakers. So far, they sound great by themselves, I still haven't put subs in yet, and allow the 6x8's to bump a bit!
