To start off, I would have rather done the Gotts Intake Mod with a K&N filter. I bought my truck with the K&N system already on it so, doing the Gotts Mod was out. This is for all those that have a "CAI", but want it to be a little more cooler.
I did see someone do a mod with an office trash can. It is here if you want to try it http://www.f150online.com/forums/showth ... post849418

This is my idea on the subject. I was trying to find something that was even more cooler than the trash can. At first I was trying to get a small cooler to work, you know what you put your beer in. I thought it might be funny, but I couldn't find one the right size. Well anyway, I noticed my battery being about the size I needed and then wondered if a battery box would fit. Well, it does!

I found this at Walmart for under $7.

This is a few photos of my system.
Next I put my filter inside of the battery box to check the fit and get an idea where to cut my hole for the adapter to slip thru.

Image
The hole I cut was 6" in diameter.

Image
I slid the box over the adapter to check the fit.

Image
That looked good so I put in the filter and attached it to the adapter.

I need to figure out the connection to the inner finder. I'm not sure if I want to go with a corrugated duct/hose or try and connect a straight tube. The hole in the finder is oblong it's 3.5" wide and 3.25" tall.
Also, I have to get the contours of the hood to get the top of the battery box to sit flush with it. I'll need to add some weather stripping also. This will seal the box to only get air from the inner fender.
That's it, not to difficult.

do a 3 inch piece of PVC into the fender and figure out a way to seal around the pipe.

Its a 2001 F150 with a 5.4L V8.

I decided to go with the straight 3" PVC pipe and a toilet flange.
Image
The outer diameter of the pipe is 3.5". I'll have to sand down the top and bottom of one end of the pipe to get the 3.25" oblong shape to fit the inner fender.
I also had to take off the other handle to accommodate the toilet flange.
Image

The flange goes from 3.5"ID to 4"ID so I made a 4" hole in the battery box.
Image

Had to cut off about a 1/2 inch off the bottom of the flange. It was hanging over the edge of the box. I'll bolt the flange to the box using the provided holes. I also made the two bottom bolts on the right side flush with the plastic. This helps the bolts not to rub on the cruse control box.

I'll probably use RTV for the openings. I still have to get the bolts and figure out the top.

:FINISHED:

Well, it's done!! Turned out better than I expected. I did figure out a way to get the contours of the hood. I used sidewalk chalk and rubbed it on top of the battery box. I started closing the hood until it stopped and then opened the hood to look where the chalk rubbed off. Used these marks to figure where I needed to cut the box. I also, used the chalk on the weather stripping to make sure I had a seal when the hood was closed.

Battery Box- $7
Toilet Flange- $6
3"pipe @12"- $2
Nuts and Bolts- $2
Weather Stripping- Free (Out of junk yard or body shop)Mine came off of a late 90's Blazer back hatch.
Total= $17 and a big smile :D

I do want to say that not all my measurements will be the same as yours. I do not even know if this is the correct K&N system for my truck. The connection up by the intake housing to the intake tube appears to be pinched, like when you're trying to put two straws together. Its weired, but it works.
