I have a 7'-6" Western on my truck. You will need a leveling kit and set of Timbrens at minimum. You will be able to plow without this but, will bottom out the plow on curbs.
I am going to go with 35" Mud tires to give me more clearance and better traction when plowing.
CAI, exhaust, programmer, e-fans, and underdrive pulleys will help for better mileage and power when pushing heavy, wet snow.
I have a 2006 FX4 supercrew I plow with. Snoway plow with timbrens. I just replaced the front "U" code springs with "U + 475 lbs" from coilsprings.com and they work great. I tried not to raise the truck at all unloaded but the new springs raise the front end by about 1". Now with the plow up the truck is stock level and handles better with the plow on. Plow up height increased by 2" above the stock plow up height. It is now perfect. Springs were $225 & ford labor was $220. Well worth it in the end. Before the timbrens did all the work, now the springs do like they should and the timbrens are now for only the heaviest front end loads.
the only way to correctly do a plow on a f-150 is to do an XL with plow prep, or XLT with plow prep package.
It is the only way you can plow and not void your warranty, it is the only way not to have to go chasing down ways to allow the front end to carry the extra weight. Personally it wasn't worth it to me to risk having my warranty voided on a 33 grand MSRP truck ( I got it for 21 but that's another story)because I wanted to go play in the snow. If i blow up the engine, snap an axle, etc, they have to fix it.
The plow prep package triggers a very specific way the truck will be built... 17 inch 7 lug steel wheels, heavy suspension, 8 foot bed, 37 gallon fuel tank, heavy duty frame, standard cab AND the only gear ratio choice is 4.10... so if you are going for gas mileage forget it.
I have a 7 1/2 foot fisher minute mount 2 on my 06 XLT plow packaged XLT, and my only complaint is the 7 lug wheels... no interchange for nicer whels.. I can get Centerlines for 1400 bucks I guess, and the stock tires should have been more agressive, but that may have been a function of the ordering dealer not specifying a better tire on the option list.
You can actually get a F250 for cheaper than a 150 set up to plow

Timbrens are a piece of rubber that help the suspension allow to handle heavy loads. I have them installed on the front only so the suspension does not sag as much when I have the plow on. I would recommend a set for anyone who uses the bed to haul heavy loads. They will help the rear of the truck from sagging.
I have the Western Suburbanite (fisher homesteader). full featured plow weighs only 275 lbs with everything. Great plow, no mods to suspension at all. Doesn't squat. I will be putting it on my third truck next week. Had it on my '03, '06, and my new '08. I love it.

i had a 1999 xlt f150 with a 7' fischer plow with a minute mount. The 5.4 engine handled the snow no problem, obviously light plowing no commercial stuff but yeah it just wears out the front end like ball joints and steering but you gotta take the bad with the good

im thinking about putting a plow on my 2007 f150, but iv seen on chevys they have to cute part of the lower bumper out so the plow mount will attach to the frame of the truck. would they have to do this for a ford? because i really dont want that.
