Ford F150 - 2004 F150 Driver Side Window Assembly

Has anyone ever rolled their driver window up and hear a snap and then the window falls back down? The wire that controls the window assembly came loose and got all tangled up in the motor. I untangled it but don't know how to run the wire back to where it belongs. Can anyone help me on how to fix this problem with me having to go to the dealership and pay $400. HELP

Perhaps someone has an idea about how to fix it, but from what I have read, it's toast. You have to replace the whole mechanism.

This happened to my 04 XLT last year. The window regulator is driven by a braided cable that got tangled up in the motor. The cable in your truck is probably broken (that's why the window fell down) and the entire regulator will probably need to be replaced.

That being said, it's not as bad as it seems.

*Don't go to the dealership, they will seriously overcharge you!* I was able to buy a new regulator and get it installed by a local collision shop for under $200, and it was done within two days.

To change it just remove your door panel, then remove the inner vapor barrier making sure not to damage it. Get some duct tape out and have it ready. Once you have access to the inner workings of your door lower the window enough to gain access to the 2 bolts that hold it to the regulator. Once these are loose and free from the window slide the window up and use that duct tape to hold it in the up position. Now remove the 4 bolts holding the regulator to the door and the 1-2 bolts (I forgot how many) that hold the motor to the door. Now compress the whole assembly and pull it out of the large door opening.

Install it by reversing the procedure with one caveat. When bolting the regulator to the door do this loosely. Then instal your window to the regulator. Move the window fully up using the door switches THEN tighten door your 4 regulator bolts. If you have any other question feel free to e-mail me or post here.

I had bought my regulator in Miami and they sold me a rear door one which is not the same size. Instead of going back to that dealer ever again I took the good regulator apart and the bad one apart and took what I needed to make the front door window work again.

Well found out that it is not the regulator and the braided cable is not broke. I don't know what the piece is called but it is the piece that the window actually sits in and runs along the track. And the braided cables hook into this piece. It is a piece of metal with rubber on one end to protect the window from the metal and on the other end is a piece of plastic which attaches to the window track. I can't find the piece anywhere and the dealership says I will have to buy the hole regulator and motor. Anyone got any ideas?????

The dealership is correct... the window bracket is only available as an integrated part of the regulator assembly. You might be able to find one at a junkyard, but it will be difficult. I'd go ahead and order the regulator assembly if I were you... you'll probably spend weeks trying to find a used one that is salvageable.

Yup it's much easier to change the whole assembly than to change the holder on either side. I had to take a good rear window regulator and my bad front window regulator to make one good front window regulator. I would not reccomend this to anyone unless you are very mechanically inclined. Just get a new regulator and follow the instructions I posted earlier in this thread and it's a piece of cake to change it out.

Wouldn't that be a warranty issue?

They refused to repair mine under warranty claiming it is a planned failure item. Whatever that means. But I have zero faith in any dealerships within 4 hours of me so I changed it out myself.

I had my drivers side go out a year ago and they replaced in under warranty (2004 Supercrew FX-4 4x4). I just had the passenger side go out and the Dealer said to bring it in and it is still covered under warranty. I have a little over 57k on it right now with a 60k warranty.

Yea the Miami area and Key West areas suck for dealership service. I cannot say anything good about either Duncan(Key West)or Maroone(Miami)Ford down here. everyone i know who owns a 2004 to 2005 have had there windows fall. all four of mine have fallen...be forwarned they will all fall again. i have owned f150 since i was 18...never again will i buy ford.
