I have turned the adjustment wheel all the way in, and all the way out and it has no effect on the indicator needle.

The wheel and cable seem to be in good shape, and the needle does move right and left when I move the gear shift lever, but it is one full position off to the right. Park is reverse etc.

Any ideas?

I discovered that the white plastic retainer that holds the wheel in place broke.

Has anyone figured out a repair, other than replacing the whole mechanism?

You should be able to replace just that little part. It's a common part, used on just about every Ford/L/M column from '92-03.

If they won't sell you one at a reasonable price, swing by a junkyard. Like I said: they're in virtually everything Ford made.

I checked with my local ford parts guy, and he tells me that adjuster is called a Prindle. Where they got a name like that, I have no idea. Had to call it something I guess.

It comes as a complete unit only, including the part that goes in the cluster that has the shift position letters on it. $31.00.

I wired the adjuster wheel in place temporarily until I can visit a junk yard. That will be when the glacier recedes.
