I have a 200 f-150 4.2L 5 speed and have been having an issue for about 2 weeks now when I start it. When I turn the key all of the gauges jump all of the way then they go back down and on occasion it has been rough starting during this period. I have a feeling it is the starter but I am no mechanic. Any help would be appreciated. I did replace the battery about a year ago and replaced the spark plugs about 6 months ago. Thank You for any help you can provide.

I would say it sounds like your battery is going bad, but you said you just bought a new one a year ago. Could be bad battery cables?

Thanks I will take a look at those. It is just a little strange because I am getting power and for the first week and a half or so there was no problems starting but now it is starting rough. It is almost like it is trying to tell me something is bad. I dont know. Thanks for the help.

I'm having the same problem and I went to my mechanic and he replaced my starter motor and solenoid cause I thought that was the problem. It still needed a starter as it was very corroded. But I still get the gauge needles going haywire and resetting themselves every time I start the truck. I too had replaced the battery a year ago so would really like some thoughts on this problem. Maybe the ignition switch??????
