I had to do a search to find the problem with my gear indicator being off by a notch and found the answer. The little white bracket that holds the adjustment wheel is broken. Does anyone know the part number or actual part name so I can get a replacement? Anyone know of a place online I can order this part? I had to hijack a photo someone posted so I can show what the part looks like, here it is... (it's the white bracket at the upper right with the black adjustment wheel in it.

it would be known as your gear shift indicator or something along that line. it comes as a whole assembley you need to unscrew the R,D,OD etc piece off of the rear of the instrument cluster and then unhook it from in the column to install the new one

That part was used on almost ALL Ford steering columns with automatics from ~'91~04. The junkyards are littered with them. If you can't find one locally, e-mail me. I know I have at least 1 that I can sell you for a few bucks.

I can't simply unscrew that bracket, pop the wheel out, push it into a new bracket and screw it back on?

What's this about unhooking from behind the instrument panel? Can anyone provide step by step instructions on replacing this part?

I have the same problem. Dealership sells the whole piece that has the indicator letters that show on the dash, the line, and wheel adjuster. Mine broke several months ago and they wanted $260 to fix it and needless to say it is still broke. Mine is just a tad off in drive and way off in park or the other gears. If any 1 has an easy fix without all the hassle then I am for it.

duct tape would be a cheap alternative.

I could imagine pulling the entire cable out would be a pain and id try to make something else work before trying that.

I just fixed this problem on a 98 ranger. I was able to remove the white piece by unscrewing it and unhooking the wire from the gear lever. I the tried some epoxy to glue the two broken pieces. The glue didnt hold once i put it back in. I then simply put the glue back on and used a small 2 inch zip tie to hold it together with some glue and put it back. Works beautifully now!

Yes, and you can pick one up from your local dealer. I just replaced mine recently. Not difficult to replace at all. The whole process took about 25 minutes and the cost of the part was around $27.00.

Look thru these pics. They're for another procedure, but they do show everything you need to know about that bracket.

You guys are awesome!!! Mine just broke the other day (showing 1 gear off), and I went to the dealer to get an estimate. The part was 24.94, but the quote to fix it including labor/tax was 120.66. I used your guys advice/pics, and used a bread tie to say the least. It fixed the problem. Obviously, it's a temporary fix, but it works!!!! Thanks for everyone's input. It really helps.

I used a piece of door bell wire, with the insulaton stripped off to wire the white bracket back in place. It doesn't adjust, but I did get the indicator in the correct alignment.

I was able to remove the screw from the white bracket. Now how do I seperate the white bracket from the wire? I'm pretty sure I have to dismantle my dash, but which end of the wire is the easiest to dissconnect?
