On a very cold morning, when shifting to Park, something in the shift lever and mechanism snapped and now the lever is not functional. I've checked the cable, it's fine. The problem lies somewhere close to the steering column but I'm unable to get a good look at it.

Unfortunately, that happens. The shifter is a bar on top of the column that joins the shift handle to the cable. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to change, and not very expensive. I have a used one for sale if you can't find one locally.

Could it possible be part of the linkage above the steering column as well? I went to the local ford dealer and that's what he said it would probably be. The part and bushings for it would be around $40 which isn't too bad.

Did you look at the photos I linked? In the 2nd one, it's the 2 shifters in the upper center.

Thanks for the pictures. I lowered the steering column and it turned out part #16 from your picture had snapped in half and the rod inside was bent.
