Ford F150 - Welding exhaust tips

I recently put in a lightning style exhaust. the pipes come out in from of the rear wheel. and i have a problem with the tip clanging against the frame. I was wondering if there is a good reason not to just weld the thing to the frame. or do you guys and gals have any other ideas? Thanks

ive heard that it will mess up your eletrical system due to most of your grounds are grounded tot he frame... and and put electricity in your frame causing it to rust prematurely... but i might be wrong lol

Can't say I ever heard of that. If you do any welding you should disconnect the battery first. No problems then. The negative side of the battery is connected to the chassis. It's not really "ground" as a vehicle floats on rubber tires, the "ground" in your house actually is connected usually to a lightning rod buried in the ground. Hence the reference to "ground". Just bend the tip down slightly. IMHO you should hang the exhaust with proper rubber hangers similar to OE. The motor mounts aren't solid and the motor twists, so does your exhaust. If you were to weld any portion of it to the frame you'll end up cracking the system, either at the weld area or further up the pipe.

He will not hurt anything as long as he ground very close to the area he is working on and gets a bite on good clean, recently ground metal.


rust prematurely? A quick weld will not cause that.....what your talking about requires a long term anode cathode reaction


Like he side, just use some rubber hangers, you want the system to have some flex.

So if im not going to weld the exhaust up, then does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the exhaust from bouncing up? I know the hangars will keep it from going down too far. but i have such little clearence i need to keep it from going up. Thanks for the help

thats the same way i did mine but i didnt use bent tubes i just welded two together at an angle, so my pipes dont come out straight like yours thay are angled back. its just one of my pipes is hiting against the frame and its really annoying so. Ill weld it up to the hangers tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Thanks for all your help!

What muffler u using?

Just bend them down, and if you do weld them I would only use a MIG welder because the arc will burn right through if you arent sure what you're doing.

The whole thing is already welded together and in the truck except for the hangers, sorry if i didnt make that clear. I went with a flowmaster. It sounds awesome. Im in shop at school and that was a project i did in class. I used the mig for all the welding so far. I had to use it at 15 V to keep it from burning through, even then i had to keep it cool. Im really happy with the project! I just need to get it hung I guess.
