Ford F150 - 4WABS codes

On a '99 4.6l v8 4wd, the abs light has come on and remains on. After searching here, sounds like it might be the rear speed sensor although with a 4WABS it might be either of the front 2 as well. Is there any posted procedure to retrieve a 4WABS code and listing of the diagnosis? Would a parts store ODBII(?) reader pick it up? The Haynes book states a few simple things to check and other than those, take it to a mechanic. Any help would be gretaly appreciated. thanks

I had the same problem a few months ago. I am still not sure about the light. I baught the speed sensor from kragen. Its like 12 bucks or something. The light went out for like an hour, and then it came back on. Its still on, but i just dont know what to do. I think getting the codes requires you to have a break code reader. Otherwise i have slammed on my breaks and they havent locked up.

To read 4WABS codes requires an advanced OBDII scanner with ABS support. These scanners start at around $1000 per, so most shops don't even have them.

Without a scanner and the DTC(s), you're left with making a few simple resistance checks of the wheel sensors.

Unplug them (there are three) and see what they measure. They typically are around 1000 - 1500 ohms. For the rear sensor, clean off any buildup of iron particles as they can interfere with the magnetic switch.

Where are the other 2 sensors located? I Have looked through the repair manual, but i guess i missed that part about 3 sensors

Only you can't diagnose yours with a paperclip.

Note that the pic and instructions are for a much older system. Use the pic as a general reference for identifying the front sensors, but plz note that the rest of diagram and instructions don't apply to the current systems.
