Ford F150 - Replacing Rear Gas Tank on 1995 F-150 4x4

What's the best way to replace the rear gas tank on a 1995 F-150 4x4 ? I have heard if you remove the bed it may be alot easier. Any truth to this?

It would be easier to remove the sending unit from the tank if you removed the bed, but dropping the tank still has to be done from under the truck. once the tank is lowered, it isnt too hard to get the sending unit out...I have done it a few times. Removing the bed would be a huge waste of time, especially since the bolts are probably rusted in.

Where did you get your tank from and how much did you pay? I have a rusted rear tank that I need to replace. It looks like it would be pretty easy to replace just remove the straps and the sending unit then replace it all. At least I hope its that easy.

I agree with Raven, removing the bed would be a big waste of time. I'm not sure where that idea even come from, it has been on this forum before.

That tank isn't really that hard to drop. Get as much gas out of it as you can to liten it up,- remove the straps, -the fill hose needs to loosen at the top (put a rag in it to keep dirt out),- get a gas line tool to remove the line, -and unhook the electrical connection. Probably an hour job.

I suppose that both of you guys have a leak and that is why you want to remove the tanks. Consider fixing the leak.---It is usually under one of the straps, usually on the bottom or on a corner.---Drain the gas out as far as you can, tilt the truck up so that the remaining gas isn't coming out the leak, and take the strap off. There are several things on the market to patch tanks. I've used JB Quick before. Clean the area really good, and put several layers on. Then put something like a piece of inner tube under the strap before you put it back up. --Most of the time there isn't rust any place else except under the straps so the fix job will take care of it.

Actually my tank is rusted completely through. You could put your foot through the bottom of it it is so rusted out. I took it to a mechanic for something else and he said he had never seen a tank like that before. I thought it was rather strange myself.

Yea, that is strange. --Now, you didn't examine that tank after tipping about a dozen long necks did you? Everything has holes in it by that time. ++Grin++
