I started my truck and went to shift into reverse and I heard a snap in the steering column. Now I can't shift into any gears and the shift lever just flops back and forth. Is it the key switch or something else in the shifting lever that is causing the problem?

You may have a linkage and not a cable...I am not completely sure. Go under the truck and find the lever on the side of the transmission. There should be either a cable or a metal rod attached to it, just follow it up from the tranny...it should run up the firewall to near the steering column. My 95 has a manual tranny or I would go out and look at it to make sure.

It's not the cable - it's the shifter tube (25). It's a more common failure than it should be, but not too difficult or expensive to fix. Remove the knee panel & the column shroud (10 & 70). Disconnect the shift indicator cable from the shifter, then spin the knurled black wheel until the tube drops out of the bracket & position the tube to the L side of the column. Find the heavier shift cable (32) at the front of the column near the firewall & disconnect it (this will be the hardest part). If you can't get it to come loose, just remove the 2 screws (34) in the end of the shift tube instead. Remove the 4 13mm nuts that hold the column up & lower it onto the seat. Remove the 4 Torx screws (26) that retain the U-clamps (27) on the shifter tube and lift the tube off the column.

If you can't find a replacement shifter locally, e-mail me. I have one.
