It's not the cable - it's the shifter tube (25). It's a more common failure than it should be, but not too difficult or expensive to fix. Remove the knee panel & the column shroud (10 & 70). Disconnect the shift indicator cable from the shifter, then spin the knurled black wheel until the tube drops out of the bracket & position the tube to the L side of the column. Find the heavier shift cable (32) at the front of the column near the firewall & disconnect it (this will be the hardest part). If you can't get it to come loose, just remove the 2 screws (34) in the end of the shift tube instead. Remove the 4 13mm nuts that hold the column up & lower it onto the seat. Remove the 4 Torx screws (26) that retain the U-clamps (27) on the shifter tube and lift the tube off the column.
