I think i know the answer but want to make sure. My cluster has went out and I am looking on ebay to buy another one. Will a 2001 F150 4x4 cluster work on my 1999 F150 4x4?

Yeah it will work but you will have to get the PATS stuff reset at the dealer otherwise the truck won't start with the new cluster. They might also set the mileage of the new one to match the old one, but not 100% on that, some ppl say yes others no.

I can tell you a brand new instrument cluster comes with a 0 mileage (I still have an extra one). I don't know if it can be reprogrammed to a different mileage or not, I suspect it can't.

I have a cluster that would fit your truck but it reads in KM/H because I'm from Canada. It's a nice set of Harley gauges.

What, specifically is wrong with your cluster? If the odometer is intermittent, it can probably be fixed relatively easily.

I understand that US federal law requires that the mileage be set to match the old one. I think Ford or a licensed speedometer shop can reset it.

Do i take the cluster to the dealer before I install it? I am trying to avoid the exuberant cost of taking to the dealer. If they are going to charge an arm and a leg, I may as well just have them replace the cluster too.

Nope because once you change the cluster your truck won't start. If you change it yourself you'll need to have it towed to the dealer to get fixed. So all in all it's probably easiest to pay the 1 hr or whatever to have the cluster changed at the dealer. Besides they might need the old cluster in the vehicle to get the mileage, etc. off of it.
