Ford F150 - broke 4x4

I backed my boat into the lake and was using the fourwheel drive but decieded to put it in two wheel drive to see if it would pull back out but the truck just spun the tires so i tried to put it back in 4X4 but it wouldn't work. the 4X4 light comes on but it doesn't ingage and the check engine light comes on along with the light that looks like a wrench. Can anyone give any advice on what it might be

It could be because it was under to much load to switch into 4wd. Did you try it in neutral with the E-brake set?
