Ford F150 - 2.9 5 speed trans and a 4.0 motor

ok i have a 1988 ford ranger 4x4 5speed an have went threw 3 motors in the truck the 2.9 cannot stand up to me and my dads uses for it. so a friend of mine gave me a 1992 explorer with a 4.0. trans in it has issues but motor is strong good compression everything checks out good. question i have is will that 4.0 motor bolt up to my 2.9 5speed transmission. i have been told yes by a couple people and no from others. if anyone knows it would be great.
