that i-6 will outhaul your nascar truck any day of the week.
after that many years it might be time for a rebuild. i'm betting there is alot of carbon build up and the carb could probably use some tuning. does it have a catalytic converter on it? if it does take it out.
you could also try messing with the rear end gears to get some more acceleration out of it. with a 3 speed transmission you're going to end up with some pretty high revs on the highway and a low top speed. that truck was built to haul some heavy loads around, not race down the highway.

I chunked my original engine after a bad carb diaphragm washed the rings out & dropped in a complete '95 F150 4.9L - wiring, accessories, Y-pipe, air filter - EVERYTHING. Since then, it's like a new truck. No problems (I used to have to re-tune that crappy 1bbl. carb every other week) and I can set the cruise over 100 mph. It's still not a Mustang GT, but it's certainly respectable for all the extra weight I've bolted on. Actual curb weight (on commercial scales) is right at 3 tons when I have my tool boxes in it.
The only extra cost in converting to a smallblock V8 (5.0L / 5.8L) would have been a radiator, hoses, & a pair of engine perches from the junkyard.

I got a 400m from my 78 Lincoln Towncar sitting in my barn maybe it's time for a change? Is this possible; or should I go with a new carb and cut the converter. The I-6 runs and starts good, but man you step on the gas and it go sqush.

we have an 82 f-350 with a 300 at work. it isnt the fastest thing but i pulled out an 8000 lb forklift i got stuck in the mud with it. started smoking one of the tires, well 2 because its a dually.
the 300 is a good strong engine. my 83 gets 0-60 pretty fast for an old truck. its just 60+ is kinda slow with the 3 speed. i have gone 100mph in it.
Look at that nascarboy, a f350 dually with a 300. One thing came to my mind after your post. I had to have the cat. converter welded twice for splitting at the seem. At the time I thought it was just old and the exhuast blew it out, mabey it's had it and is not letting the engine breath. It's got two I beleive. Thanks.

Ford put 400Ms into that engine bay, so it's certainly POSSIBLE... I wouldn't do it, though. You can get so much more driveability & reliability from a good EFI engine swap. More power, too, with the right setup, i.e., MAF, SC, chip, etc. Finding a trans that will bolt up to a 400 can be difficult &/or expensive since you have to use one from a diesel or 7.5L.
