i've got a 98 2wd and i want to do a spring over axle lift to gain a little clearance. i am good with a wrench but i have never done any suspension work. are there any pit falls i should watch out for. and where can i get some sort of "how to" or guidlines (preferably free). i know this is a simple conversion but i just don't like to go into things blind.

To do it right, you must weld on new axle perches to the top of the tube, and they MUST be at the correct angle for the new ride height. It will also SEVERELY affect the front suspension, handling, & alignment, so you'd be better off buying a pre-engineered lift KIT. Look for those marketed as "prerunner" lifts since they're typically geared toward 2WDs.
There are MANY more considerations to any suspension mods than just moving parts around & bolting them on.
