I have a 97 f-150 w/ 4.6 auto trans, i have been recently haveing shift studder, seems like shift points or something because it acts like it is confused weather to downshift or not but i give it gas and it downshifts and goes on? Seems to only happen under regular or low exceleration? I have serviced trans already- Thank you for your insite!!!!
it sounds like your havin the same problem as i am. My 97 just got out of the shop for rotors,brakes,tie rod, alignment, new tires,spark plugs,the works as you can see. Does yours feel like a misfire but 100times worse. mine does good in park and neutral until i put it in gear then it stutters and stall sorta and vibrates terrible. If that sounds like yours and you hear anything please let me know and ill do the same
No where talking about 2 diff things, your problem is def missfire, mine only studders when shifting into third or fourth @ low rpms and dow shifts hard as hell into same gears, not a missfire, its a tranny issue. Not sure if its the rpm or the soft shift points? Its retarded and no one on here seems to have feed back. Im sure this is common and dont have no idea why anyone has no feedback! Your truck is def missfiring, i would take it back to them and hook up to scanner and watch missfire data and figure out what cyclinder is trippin! Thanks for the reply though

I have the exact problem too. it's been happening the last couple years. I hardly ever drive the truck at all so whenever It sits for a extended amount of time it will shift fine but the more I drive it ~5-10 miles later it will slowly develop a jerky up or downshift. I'm changing the Tranny fluid/filter, front/rear diff and transfer case fluids today. i'll post back on if it fixes the problems.

Mine was doing the same thing. A really half-assed job (like didn't even change the filter, just pulled the pan off, drained it, and put in 5 new quarts of fluid) of changing the tranny fluid fixed it completely. Mine had never been done in 120,000 miles. When I change my oil in three, I'll drain the torque converter, change the filter, and get as much of the old fluid out as I can before I put new in.
i also have a 97, and your problem could be with spark plugs sitting in water. the plugs sit down in a hole on top of the ngine, and sometimes fill upp with water, also could be caused by coolant leak onto #8 cyinder from heater hose. As fan as the guy with the shifting problem, i spent some years as a ford technician, and it sounds like it coul be a SEPERATOR PLATE GASKET issue. when the truck runs, the metal parts expand, allowing a little fluid to leak past a maybe warped part? this may be a trans shop related thing. the fix would be to replace the VALVE BODY. if the studder is at the 3-4 or 4-od shift, like you're on the rumble strips on the highway, change fluid in pan, and in the torque convertor, as it is a slipping torque convertor clutch you are feeling, and it's caused by trans fluid additive breakdown. let me know...
