I was looking at the VIN last night on my truck and the 4th letter in the VIN is a "Z" I know it is referring to the brake type but I have been looking at the VIN decoder sheet and I do not see the letter "Z" in the list. Not that I am worried, just curious as to what it means.

The VIN 4th digit is brakes/restraints/GVWR. The engine is the 8th digit.
The fourth VIN position is for the brake system and the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) class. All brake systems are hydraulic. The codes are: > A — Less than 3,000 pounds. > B — 3,001 to 4,000 pounds. > C — 4,001 to 5,000 pounds. > D — 5,001 to 6,000 pounds. > E — 6,001 to 7,000 pounds. > F — 7,001 to 8,000 pounds.
According to the '97 CD, "Z" is not a valid value for the 4th digit on your VIN.

Well the truck is a 1998 model, but anyway. Seems like I always own something has something weird to it that can't be explained. Once again it doesn't really matter, was just curious what the "Z" was for. I know that I have brakes and they stop me, so that is what counts. Thanks again for everyone’s effort, I greatly appreciate it.

I dunno why I thought it was a '97 - here's the list from the '98 CD.
The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and GVW code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes). > A — 0-3000 Pounds > B — 3,001-4,000 Pounds > C — 4,001-5,000 Pounds > D — 5,001-6,000 Pounds > E — 6,001-7,000 Pounds > F — 7,001-8,000 Pounds > G — 8,001-8,500 Pounds > H — 8,501-9,000 Pounds > J — 9,001-10,000 Pounds > K — 10,001-14,000 Pounds > L — 14,001-16,000 Pounds > M — 16,001-19,500 Pounds
... > F08 — F-150 Flareside, 4x4
Try entering your full VIN at this site or this one to see if it's valid.
