I am helping a friend. His '94 F-250 started stalling. The truck idles great, put it in reverse, neutral or first gear and it is fine. Put it in drive or 2 and it dies. No running rough, put it in drive or 2 and it is like you have turned off the key. I pulled codes and got a 172, followed most of the diagnostic routine and could not find anyhting. Hopiong you guys could help point me in a good direction before I try to get it back into town. Thnaks.

Bob

You say it dies "just like you shut the ignition off". Would it do that if you fed it just a bit of gas, maybe up to 1000 rpm's and dropped it in drive? If it keeps running then, I'd say its a tune up problem of some sort, and I'd try cleaning the IAD and Throttle body.------If it does die at that RPM it's probably electrical and my first guess would be to check the neutral switch for a malfunction.

The neutral switch (MLPS) won't kill the engine, regardless. It only affects the starter & the transmission shifting.

It's either a bad IAC, or a mechanical/electrical fault in the steering column, which is easy to work on.
