I've tried to time it by ear,but I don't think it's quite there yet. Anyone know the proper timing?

It's printed on a white sticker on the front of the valve cover & the timing cover, but all '84-96 Ford EFIs are 10°BTDC. You can use a timing light to get it there, or you can use a vacuum gauge to set it for the engine's current condition.

Don't forget to disconnect the computer wire coming into the distributor before you time it, or you will never get it right!

My memory is failing, but it mught be a dummy plug.

The SPOUT (SPark OUTput) connector is a jumper, so not what I'd call a "dummy", but I can see why some might call it that. The instructions for setting the timing are on the emissions sticker, probably on the hood or core support.
