My front fuel tank is rusted and leaking. I can see it visibly leaking from the rusted area along the retention strap. Is replacing it simply a matter of:

1. Taking it off
2. Removing the pump unit
3. Putting the pump unit into new tank
4. Strapping it up?

I got my directions from here:

That sounds about right. It's not a hard task at all, just dirty. Just be careful of the fuel lines and the filler neck so you don't damage them in the process of dropping the tank. If you have alot of miles on it, you might consider replacing the pump and sending unit while you have it out. Just a sugestion.

Chuck, any idea what size my front tank is?

I think we have the same truck, different year.

Is 19 gal right?

Just an idea if you want a short cut: My guess is that your whole tank is solid except where it is rusted under that strap. (I've had that experience several times. If you want you could drain the tank as much as possible,Take the strap loose, then "tilt" the truck to where no more gas runs out the rusted whole. Sand it really well and then apply either a gas tank sealer or, I use, JB Weld. When you put the strap back on put something like a piece of inner tube rubber between it and the tank. --I've fixed several tanks like this and it held well for years. Save you a lot of time and money.

I'm pretty sure mine is 19 gallons, so I would imagine your's is too. Lloyd has a good idea too though.

Click my signature & look in the EFI fuel pump album. It shows a Bronco tank, but it's fundamentally the same as yours.
