This might sound like an oddball question, however here goes. Given that it appears that a sealed air box is better for bringing in cooler air, many of the better air intakes like K & N are just open and only pull in the hot engine compartment air. What kind of material might be best used to manufacture a box to seal in the air filter to make your own air box? After all if you already owned an open air intake, why buy another just to get a factory made air box. Would just some sheet metal do, or would it soak up too much heat.

if i were gonna do it i would insulate it somehow....1 inch builders foam is cheap and easily accesable at depot. If you do it nice, i suppose you could cover it with metal, glue and paint. hardest part would be fitting the hood contour.

The way I would do it is make a ram air style tube that runs from the wheel well or below the engine that shoves air up into the box. Cut a hole in the bottom of the box so this way if its not very nice looking you wont see it. I would think something alone the lines of drier tubing would sustain the heat then insulate like jmorriss said.

lol....on my 88' i took 3" dryer hose and some pvc fittingsand made an adapter plate for the front of my intake box. I rant the hose up to an open spot on the far right side of my grill. Combined with some screen I had a forced air intake. It actually improved my mpg from 13-14. I think it cost me all of $20
