I just recently purchased a 2005 f150. It has 113000km on it. I have a slight ticking noise coming from the engine. When i purchased it I did not notice it. It only ticks after it warms up. I am running 5w 20 in it. I had the mechanic do a code read on it befor I purchased it and it came up clear as can be. I get the most noise at idle when I rev it to around 1200rpm. Over 2000rpm its not really noticable over the engine noise. At idle it is there but hard to hear. It is occasionally noticable when driving and you drive by a parked car or a bridge and the sound bounces back to you. I have heard this is a common ford sound and was just wondering how many others have this sound and if it is anything to worry about. Thank you in advance

Check for exaust leaks, mostly on the passenger side manifold.

Im pretty sure its not an exhaust leak as this is what I also thought it was at first as it does have a similar sound. Its more of a ticking then a leaking tho.

So an update on my truck. I took it into the shop I used to work at and had it hooked up to the computer. All cylinders have the same compresion, cylinder wall temp is fine, and it did not read and codes of an sort. Then we tried to listen to the sound and we could not get it to make it at all for the first 15 mins of it running. Finally it started to make the sound at around 900rpm. Over 1500 or at idle nothing. If you hold it steady at 900 it makes the sound. We then started to listen for it and it sounds like its coming from both sides and the front. All the mechanics there where baffled as we know it had compresion and no codes. We then called around and found that the 5.4s have a problem with there cam shaft phaser. Called ford and they wanted $2500 to fix it and said it was not worth fixing. My mechanics had all never heard of this part so they did not know what to do. Has anyone else ever had this problem and if so what did you do about it. Thank you.

yes, my 2005 did it from new. they fixed it in 06. I was told would not affect the engine. They have a fix but will only due it under warranty if it fails. I have 79000 and haven't had any problems. I wouldn't worry about it. It was a design flaw and unless you want to spend the money, just live with it. I don't notice it much anymore.

After my spark plug blew out, I did a google search on spark plugs blowing out of the triton motor. come to find out that there are thousands and thousands of complaints from ford owners. Even a class action suite trying to start in Califirnia. There is also a tell tale sign that this is about to happen. That sighn is: A LOUD TICKING NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE LIFTERS TICKING COMMING FROM THE BANK THAT IS ABOUT TO BLOW THE PLUG. You are going to seriously think about selling your truck after you read this crap!!!!!

the spark plug blowing out problem is only in the 5.4 2v motors, 2004 and older.

i have a 2005 150 with a 5.4 and i just recently started noticing a ticking noise. I just put exhaust on my truck about two months ago so i thought it was a leak either on the clamps or a gasket on the manifold. but i had two people look at and they both said it sounds like a lifter. My truck only has 65000 miles on it. Ive also had two fuel injectors go out around 30000 and because of that a catalytic convertor went bad. I love my truck but ive had a lot of issues with it

it's not a lifter........cam phase sensor. Don't worry about it.....will cost a fortune to fix and really not necessary. Unless, you can't live with that annoying little ticking.

Mattwho87 - I also had a couple fuel injectors replaced at 2 different times, around 8000 and about 15000 under warranty. I don't know if you got them under warranty but ford extended injector warranty to 150000 miles. Mine seem to coicide when I used Sunoco gas with ethanol. Filled it twice and had fuel injector problems after. I haven't used fuel with ethanol since and have had no other issues. I have 80000 now.

My 05 5.4 3v is getting the phaser fix now, and yes it is a common noise in the fords but it is not supposed to be there, and yes it can eventually take your motor out, they will tell you it won't but it can, not in every case, do you really want to take the chance or spend a little cash to keep the worst motor ford ever built together. I say this because if Henry Ford was alive, I would drive it up his ass. This is the problem, cheap parts + cheap labour = cheap truck.

Just had mine done as well.Cam phasers are located at the front of each head under the valve covers attached to the front of the cam shaft. There is a TSB # 06-19-08, ask your dealer for that information.Recommending to upgrade both cam phasers as there is an issue and also to replace all lash adjusters as well.Had mine done recently and now engine sounds normal. If that lasts will see, if not last Ford I ll ever buy.

I have 2004 FX4 with the same sound. I didn't notice the sound until after having the spark plugs replaced, which they were seized up in the block and had to be drilled out. I was told this is a common problem for the 2004 5.4L. Wonder if this has anything to do with it.

My mechanic said the noise was just normal ford noise and was not sure it is aproblem. It is annoying though. He added an oil additive he thought may suppress the noise. It work for about 5 miles.

I just hope it is not a problem that may cause major trouble if not addressed.
