you can use just about any engine you want in the Ford family. If it were me, I'd swap a 5.0 in it if I'm going to do all that work anyway, but that's just me.

Yes you can use a v6. You'll need new motor mounts, all the wiring and the PCM if your staying fuel injected and the radiator that matches your swap motor. -Mike-

2.3 is easy as pie to find, and cheap, and durable plus think of MPGS. small block and big block fords can be swapped into them, but the time and money. see this:

i rolled my ranger and its still running i dont know how you blown yours up. did it throw a timing belt? hydrolock? running low on oil? (they are known for external oil leaks because of the headgasket)
find a 5.0 equipped explorer and the engine swaps right in. early explorers and rangers have the same frame design upfront.

im interested in how you blew that engine? I still have my first 87 ranger 2.3l from high school and refuse to get rid of it cause it has never cost me a dime besides maintenance. Id go with a 6 cyl if i were you. Most comfortable seats ive ever sat in........

You need the matching trans with any v6.

That is a definite.
