A friend of mine messed up his ranger pretty bad, busted up the rear axle and bent the drive shaft. I have no idea how. He's asking me to install a new shaft and rear end on his truck since I've done it on a few others before.

Anything in particular I should watch out for on a 98 XLT 2WD? Any tricks or gotchas?

Thanks folks.

Bent the drive shaft? I know you said you have no idea, but either he tried to do some offroading, or something extreme.
As far as any tricks, none that I know of. Is the frame, shackles and all that still intact and not damaged? As long as everything is good, should be a simple swap.

Something stupid, I'm sure.

I told him I'd only do it if the frame, mounts and such are still ok. If they aren't I will end up parting the truck out instead, unless it's something very minor.

If it comes to that... I might be interested in buying a couple of things off of y'all.

So it certainly appears do-able. The shop "exaggerated" about the bent drive shaft, I put a straight edge around it and it's fine. The rear axle assembly is shot though, but (with the possible exception of 1, to be discussed) all the mounts look fine, no signs of stress.

I do have a question about the rear shock frame mount. The frame looked like the mounting portion was bent toward the top, but everything still appeared square and there weren't any rust cracks or other signs of undue stress to this part of the frame. Is this an intentional bit of design, or has this frame already been bent in the past? If it's not designed, it really doesn't seem like too big a deal to hot wrench it down and weld some additional support in there, it's a small spot.

Anyone have any advice, or at least is willing to take a picture of the top rear shock frame mount on a 98 or newer ranger? If not I'll head to the dealership today and look around.
