I'm a student and I was hoping to get a little help with what kind of mods ya use to increase your fuel mileage. Personal experiences, the good and bad, would be greatly appreciated.

There aren't too many mods that will increase your MPG. The best approach is to keep up on all your regular maintenance and try to keep your right foot off the floor.

If you have heavy running boards or step tubes remove them. Brush guards also,

If you have a good tires you might want to chance leaving your spare tire at home.

Anything you don't need in your truck take it out.

I added some Seafoam to my tank a couple of weeks ago & got an increase in mpg, not much but over all I went from an average of 10.5 to 12.1, in the city.

Simply don't press hard on the go pedal. As mentioned many times before... it's a PU truck. Gas mileage is what it is. There is no magical way to increase mph (though, you could try a Tornado or magnets)

it all depends on your style of driving - city or highway, 0-60 measured in seconds or minutes, all kinds of stuff affect your mpg's - i work at a college campus and the best way i see is to park your truck in one spot and get a bicyce out of the bed to go to different classes in - one of my fraternity brothers did this and the savings on one semester paid for the bike and more - he also said it was often faster to get to classes on his bike

Bottom line....it is what it is. Only way to get better mpg is a different vehicle, but for me thats not gonna happen, love the truck and I will suffer with the gas prices. I did however get the edge a while back, and that gave me 2-3 mpg better, but at 399.00 it will take a lil bit to get the money back, but I also got it for performance and when I do that I go back down in the money savings, but hey, I'm having fun and thats all that matters.

I don't know how accurate my personal observance is, but I had cat-back duals installed on my 2004 f150 5.4. My mpg to work and back went from 12.5 mpg to better than 14 mpg. I had also made a trip before duals from Jackson, MO to Bowling Green, KY and had gotten 15.5 mpg. That trip was mostly highway travel at 75 mph. I made a trip this weekend (my first long trip since installing duals) so I tried to kep track of my mileage. the first leg of the trip I traveled 110 miles of interstate at 75 mph and then about 60 miles of rural highway at 60 mph. I averaged 17.4 mpg on that leg. I refueled my truck, for accuracy, but the pump cutoff failed and I poured about a gallon on the pavement at the gas station. That meant my filler neck was filled to the cap.The next leg of the trip was a return of the 60 miles of rural highway. This time at 55 mph & followed by 30 miles of interstate @ 65 mph. I can't give a definite number on this leg (because of the gas station fiasco) but the dash readout indicated 22.9 mpg. For the last leg of this trip I refueled again. It was 83 miles of interstate at a steady 65 mph. My truck computer indicated 19.9 mpg. After refuel and mathematics, I came up with 22 mpg. So, keeping in mind that, for the first and second legs I had to rely on the computer because the fuel cutoff contaminated both before and after readings, the third leg would be the most accurate. Or would it? I also have to say that I was pretty anal about my acceleration, maintaining steady speed, etc. So...I made both mechanical & behavoiral mocifications. I intend to add a cold air intake, throttle body spacer, chip mod, etc. I'll keep you posted.

Your truck weighs more then 5300lbs and pushes a ton of wind, I find it really good on gas to take my wifes car and only use the truck for what I bought it, pulling my boat! Good luck though.

If you are a student and could truly afford to buy that truck......then you can afford to put fuel through it.

true enough........and problem is, with the gas price trends going on now - it also reduces trade-in value of our trucks.

Isumud,

There will be a product soon which you can just bolt on to your pickup and get 17.75 mpg combined and 21.5 - 22.0 mpg on the freeway. Check out my photos.

It looks terrible I know. Style is not the idea here it is saving money. I am working in Dallas presently and save $20.00 in gas when I go home in Little Rock and back. Do that every other weekend and you will save $520.00. If I went home every weekend, I would save $1040.00 in one year.

Do you do much freeway driving? Do you have a 6.5 foot bed? I have a unit you could road test if you like, for free. Your in Shreveport area I see, one of my favorite towns. The lid is in Little Rock. Just need to know what color your truck is if you are interested.

It may look funny but it saves alot of gas money through Aerodynamics. Proven to work in road test which began last April, 2007. Proven out in two wind tunnels. Screw OPEC!
