How do you keep snow and ice or dirt and mud from clogging the capless gasoline filler?

Smear a thin coat of vasoline over the cap area, then prior to filling, use hot soap/water to wash off.

Actually there is a thin gasket that the fuel door closes on and there are holes/notches that help clear anything away before it gets into the fuel neck.
