Just got a new Ford 250, well new to me. It is manual transmission with overdrive. I need to have the overdrive explained so that I do not ruin the transmission.

I was told that it acts like a fourth gear. So when you hit about 50 mph hit the button and you go into overdrive.

What has me confused is when overdrive is OFF the light is ON. Is this correct? And when I start the truck the light is OFF(overdrive is ON). I would drive around town with the overdrive ON (LIGHT OFF) before I noticed. Am I ruining it.

And lastly I am getting a shake (not too violently) of the engine when I hit around 35 miles per hour. Stops when I hit 40mph. Does this have anything to do with the Overdrive.

Just got this truck and I want to make it last but have never owned a truck before.

thanks

Welcome to the club!

The OD will automatically be on when you first start the truck. Pushing the button, thus illuminating the "OD OFF" light on the dash, will either cause the transmission to downshift to the next lower gear while you are crusing around at highway speeds or never allow the transmission to upshift to that "cruising" gear when you go.

You won't ruin the transmission driving around with the OD off. You'll just eat up your gas if you get on the highway as you drive around in 3rd or 4th gear. Depends on the transmission you have.

As you said "So when you hit about 50 mph hit the button and you go into overdrive," you are keeping the truck from going into OD. Get on the highway, cruise at about 60, and then push the button. You should feel a downshift along with seeing a higher RPM if you have a tach. Push the button again to turn OD back on, and the truck should kick into that gear with a lower RPM. Thats OD.

But you really can't ruin the OD.

And as far as that shakin' thing. I have no idea. But I do know that it shouldn't be related to OD.

I hope this helps your OD question and that I didn't confuse the heck outta ya. Maybe someone can give a simpler explanation!

I take it that you mean an automatic transmission with OD?
