| NJ has a new test for front end function. My 2001 F150 4X4 failed for front end variation.(side to side)? 34000 miles never been offroad steering is as tight as a sports car. Any clues what their talking about? Running Dunlop 255-85-16 tires no lift.

| I don't think it a new law, when I lived there they had a mileage or age of car, they would lift the front end and check the wheel bearing.
Not sure about the SIDE TO SIDE, if they are looking for end play the when the turn the wheels on the outside, the steering wheel follows.
I hated those inspections until I moved to Florida, they did not inspect cars and some of them looked liked they were just bought from a scape metal yard, cannot even think how poor mechanically they are. Giorgia just check emission and it your check engine light is on, you fail, I think they all should check brakes like NJ, they get in it pull up and slame the brakes on and read the gauges. |

Houston, we have a winner. The same thing happened to me recently. Took my car in for inspection and they called me to let me know that it failed because of worn ball joints. I asked them what the hell that has to do with emissions and he started stuttering when trying to explain that although is wasn't state law I should go ahead and let them do it anyway. Price was $645.00. I told them to screw off, took it five minutes down the road and had it pass with flying colors. |

| jstopple,
how long do you have before you have to go back? i just passed NJ inspection in january, but I don't recall a front end variation test... did they at least explain what you have to do? I know they usually explain why you failed and how to fix it. or perhaps ask a mechanic? Mechanics usually know what is needed to pass inspections _________________ Bad A$$ Girls Drive Bad A$$ Toys

| Upper and lower ball joints getting replaced today. Fords designed obsolescence by omitting grease fittings has burned me again. Thanks, Ford engineers. 34000 miles to major frontend overhall. Sincere thanks to all who answered. jstopple |
