id rather trust my stock clutch fan to keep my engine cool then circuity to determine when the fan cuts on. now if the e-fan was a factory option then id be all on it. but aftermarket i wouldn't trust. there are gains to be had from the e-fans tho.

| They are one of the best things you can do for throttle response increase, slight HP and MPG increase. As for the last guys response about circuitry, don't forget all small car engines that are sideways use and e-fan, and only one. My flex-a-lite has two! If one dies I gotta backup. You can also purchase an overide switch to turn them on manaully if it will make you feel better. |

If you do get them, get an adjustable thermostat, not a fixed one. I had a fixed one and they would cycle on and off a lot when sitting still. _________________ 2001 F350 "Short bus" XLT Crew Cab short bed 4x4 7.3 Diesel

| I used an electric fan out of a Mark VIII and it was one of the best mods I did. I wouldn't necessarily advice you to go the same way I did. The Mark VIII fan draws alot of amps on start up and it was a pain in the butt at first bc it would keep blowing my relay until I finally found one to hold up. Good luck _________________ 97 F150 Extended Cab XLT V8 4.6L

Great point! I've seen some brands that have a thermocouple you tape to the radiator hose. CHEESY. Most units that have an electronic controller have a temp adjuster screw. I have the flex-a-lite, and the factory setting was perfect. BTW, it uses a small thermocouple that sticks in between the radiator fins close to where the incoming hot water is. |

I sourced all my parts from the local advance auto, and I have to say I was rather impressed. The total came to like $160 for 2 16" fans and the thermostat, and yes, it was the kind that probes into the actual radiator fins. I've had the fans and radiator covered in mud and the truck never overheated and the fans never complained. _________________ 2001 F350 "Short bus" XLT Crew Cab short bed 4x4 7.3 Diesel

I don't think I have any pics, i'll have to dig around and see. I no longer have the truck, but to the best of my knowledge the only parts I needed were
2 hayden 16" fans
1 Thermostat, I think it was 185 degree, or somewhere close. Like I said, get and adjustable
Some short pieces of wiring and some splice and butt connectors
Ford fan clutch wrench set-go ahead and get it, it saves all the time in the world. _________________ 2001 F350 "Short bus" XLT Crew Cab short bed 4x4 7.3 Diesel

| How did you attatch the fans though? Did you just bolt them to the radiator or did you make your own fan mount? |

They came with a mount. You push a rod through the fins and then push a backing plate on it and cut off the excess. I never had a problem with them. _________________ 2001 F350 "Short bus" XLT Crew Cab short bed 4x4 7.3 Diesel

I am not very good at all that stuff. | I just installed the Advanced Auto fans last week, the fan clutch on my 98 F-150 had locked up. I felt that $500 for fans was too much, so I checked out my local auto store, got 2 16" Imperial fans by Hayden automotive (part #226116) for $75 each. I decided to skip the thermostat control in favor of 2 manuel switches ( I can let the engine warm up in the winter and then switch on one or both fans based on the prevailing conditions). Advanced Auto did have a thermostat dual fan control for $36 (since I didn't go that route I don't have the part #). The push through mounts worked great, the fans measure 15 3/4 " so they just fit side by side on the radiator with about 1/2" to spare. The fans come stock as pushers, you have to flip the blades over and reverse the wiring (blue wire ground, black wire hot) to make them pullers. I used some 12 guage wire, 30 amp inline fuses and two 30 amp switches. It's only been a week, but I can feel a difference in throttle response and the fans are a lot quieter than the stock belt drive fan. I haven't checked to see if there are any mileage gains yet. I live in NC and the weather is still mild, but so far the fans have no problem cooling the engine. I pull a trailer for work and I've only had to use both fans in stop and go traffic. I don't know what is better about the higher priced fan kits, maybe they're better quality and last longer? I guess I'll find out as the miles go by.
Hope that helps anyone looking to do this mod on the cheap! _________________ Q: How is a golf ball different from a Chevy?
