| I have a 91 F150 with a 5.8. When the steering wheel is adjusted to it's full up-right postion, it takes a few turns of the key to get engine started. When the steering wheel is lowered at any level, the truck starts the first turn no questions asked. This sounds like a bad key cylinder, but wanted a second opinion. Thank you _________________ MJ |

| It could also be the actuating rod, also called the activator rod, inside the steering column too. |

| I have had the steering column off of a few vehicles including Ford Crown Vic, Ford Pinto, Ford Taurus, and 71 Dodge Dart.
What I would do first is get a shop manual/ford repair disk and take a look at the steering column pictures and become familiar with the parts that might be suspect. Most manuals usually have a section for removal/replacement of most parts (water pump, throttle body etc.). The manual might also have your issue in the trouble shooting section. Read this section. This will give you an idea of how tough this might be for you and the tools required. You'll probably need a wheel puller that you can get as a loaner from some of the national parts stores.
Hope this helps!

| I have to agree with vamp on this one, I have an 87 and the actuator rod runs from the cylinder down the column to the ignition switch.
If you have the wheel tilted all the way up it changes the geometry of the cylinder to rod connection, probably putting it in a slight bind or there might be something else loose inside the column that is getting in the way like a loose screw(I know I've got a few!).
I would just refrain from starting it in the full up position. |
