some quick and easy checks you can do yourself. make sure there is no water in the fuel. you can simply loosen up the screw on the bottom of the filter. turn your key on engine off and see how long the wait to start light stays on. if it goes out quickly the glo plug module is shot. to test your glo plugs, get a light tester and attach the alligator clip to the positive cable of the battery. remove the wire from each glo plug and test the tip of the glo plug. if the light tester lights, that glo plug is good. if you find a bad one, replace them all. if you do find a bad one, be careful removing the glo plugs since you have used ether. ether will make the glo plugs swell if you used it constantly. to check your block heater, have it plugged in and in the morning when you go to start it, stick your finger into the radiator and see if its warm. hope this helps.

i have a 1989 7.3 that lately has had a lot of problems starting as well lots of things can cause this. some of the test i tried before finaly fixing it were replacing all the leak back tee's on the injecters plus o-rings and all the hoses, pulled off the fitting on top of the injecter pump (start of leak back) it has a ball in it kind of like a back flow valve that was not seating very well. I also pulled the hose off at back of motor that leads to tank and blew air through it until i could hear it in the tanks. the problem on mine was a cracked rubber hose from the water seperater to the leak back tee's that was allowing air in to the system causing all of the fuel to flow back to tanks. mine had issues starting the first time each day but would start fine after that have had no problems since. Good luck they can be a big pain in the arse

when the key is turned on the wait to starts light stays on for 3 seconds while the ticking from the glow plugs continues for about 10 more seconds
