I hear this when the truck has sat for along time like a period of 8 hours or overnight. When I start it it makes this sound then goes almost completely away after motor has warmed up. I am wondering if the oil pump is going bad or are my lifters needing adjustment. Any ideas would be helpfull. Oh yeah it has 117,000 miles.

There are no lifters and no adjustments to be made for valve train. The diesel sound you are talking about, is it loud or kinda quite. Tritons are known to have CSK. Cold Start Knock.....piston slap in the bores until they expand and stop/quite down.
I didn't look to see where you are from but CSK is much more noticeable when temps drop to around 40 and lower....

A little more explanation on the noise would be helpful. Solid KNOCK, more like a tap, tap, tap.
Just start all the sudden.

Check your oil level also.

Hope I helped!

Check your oil level - I need to change my valve cover gaskets (been putting it off) but that's how I know I'm low a 1/2 quart or so by the clacking!

the sound I hear is like metal to metal for about 10 seconds then the tapping you described but once the engine is warmed up it almost completely goes away. The level is fine, I just changed it two weeks ago and it was making this noise before the oil change. I live in St. Louis, so it has not gotten real cold yet.

Read a few posts down in today's current posts. Titled "possible rod problem". Sounds like the same problem. Nothing to worry about.

Sounds like to me you are having the typical problem with the top end a little slow to get oiled up. This happens to few motors now and then. The solution I use is LUCAS OIL STABILISER. I assume you are using non synthetic oil. Does your engine use any oil between changes? I use the lucas 2x a year. I have 180k on my 98 4.6. I also swear by CASTROL 5w30. I'd say run a bottle of the lucas oils stabiliser and you will not hear the tap, tap, tap.

What is the "right" way to use the stabilizer? Essentially the only instructions on the bottle are "Engines - 15 to 20%". Can I just add this to the existing oil in the engine or do I need to change the oil when adding this?

Well the motor holds 6 quarts. I put in the LUCAS in place of 1 quart. You can do whatever you want about adding it to the existing oil. I seem to remember you saying it hasn't been that long since changing. I like using it with fresh oil, but, that is just me.
