I have an 05 stx 4.6L with a turndown flowmaster exhaust and would like to know which intake is the better choice. I am looking at the K&N 77 series or the K&N FIPK. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Between those two, I've heard that the FIPK is better because the intake tube is polymer (doesn't heat soak as quickly) and has a taper to it for increased velocity.

That being said, I'm not running one currently, but have used K & N intakes in the past on other vehicles, and they are usually pretty good....

I'm currently running a Huge JLT Ram Air intake which I'm totally sold on - (after I did a few minor modifications to it to get rid of some obstructions in the intake path and smoothed out the airflow). There are pictures of it in the "My Photos" section. It's an S & B filter , but it's exactly like a K & N, only about five times the size...... Works well for me.

ram air comes threw the hood and right into the intake system. cold air intake is replacing your stock cold air intake with something that cost 200 and a neat sound. all in all, put that money towards gas. dont make darkdan start posting websites on how dirty cold air intakes are..lol ive learned plenty from him, lets give em a break on this one..

If you are looking for another option...check out www.outlawpower.com - It is a sealed intake - I have had the one on my 5.4 for abotu 3 months and love it.

All a matter of personal taste really... The difference between one oiled-gauze intake and the next is usually minor...

I happen to like the JLT Ram Air because it flows major amounts of air (more than the K&Ns, but only because it's HUGE), has a direct intake path (no bends) and works well with my intake arrangement.....plus it was very reasonably priced ($145 for my model year). It took some minor modifications to get it to work the way I wanted it to (not necessary, but I'm a bit anal about some things). I've been real happy with it. I've run K&Ns on most of the cars & bikes I've have for thirty-some years, and never regretted putting any of them on.

You have to remember that performance parts work together as a team ...don't expect one aftermarket component to give you gobs of power/torque,and better gas mileage (no matter what the adds say)....

You are increasing air-flow when you add an aftermarket intake..... though it will make an improvement on it's own, to take full advantage of it, you ideally need to modify your fuel maps (a hand-held tuner, or "chip"). The addition of freer-flowing exhausts will kick it up another notch....and there are all kinds of mods beyond that.

There is no ONE "which is better "A" or "B" answer when it comes to performance parts..... It all depends on what other components you have, or are going to add in the future. Just bolting stuff on haphazardly will usually lead to frustration and disappointment. Best bet is to just try to make the engine more efficient, and read up on what has worked for other people.

Here is a great website that explains the physics behind air intakes and heat shields.

if i were you, i wouldn't go with a K&N because it uses oil. soo u would have to clean it often. instead i would go with the Brute force, Framboost, or the Green cold air intakes.
