| Whats up fellas, new here but have been lurking for a while.
I want to beef up the audio system. I currently have a kenwood kdc-mp532u head unit. This is great for me as I don't want anything too fancy and it does play my iPod and MP3 Cds, along with the USB. I have all this hardware hooked up and fed through my glove box so its clean.
Anyway, I'm looking to replace the speakers and put in a small powered sub. I've read on here that I have 6x5s up front and 6x8s in back, yet, Best Buy, and Crutchfield tell me I have 6x8s all around.
I have a 2001 F150, Extended cab with fold up rear bench seats.
So my questions are:
1 - What kind of speakers do I have in all 4 doors?
2 - Will a powered 6.5 or 8 inch bazooka tube fit under the seats? I'm not looking for earth shaking bass, just enough for a clean, crisp sound. I listen to rock and country. Anyone have experience/alternatives to these? Price and ease of install are factors here. Please don't respond with "F that, you should get a custom enclosure, raise the seats 4 inches, and run 3 12s with a 1200 watt amp." Not gonna happen.
thanks guys!

6x8s i believe. some have 5x7s but you can just get a 'step-up' mounting plate for a 6x8 hole.

probably 6", 8" maybe on pass side with jack removed. here are the specs:
6" - 18.125" x 6.75" x 8"
8" - 18.125" x 8.5" x 10"

i like bazooka tubes, but i wouldn't get anything smaller than the 8". i had a friend who had 2 10" in his car and they hit very hard. _________________ silly girls, trucks are for boys!

Thanks for the response! To clarify, I'm wondering if anyone knows if the bazooka tube will fit underneath the folding rear seat in my extended cab, not underneath the front passenger seat, which is a captain's seat.
I think I'm gonna pick up some infinity's for all 4 corners.

if nobody replies, you can try a little experiment yourself. cut a piece of paper (newspaper would probably be large enough), to the above specs, take out the jack under your rear seat, and try to fit it in. you might have to remove the remaining bolt that sticks up out of the floor. _________________ silly girls, trucks are for boys!

i believe that is too big to fit under the rear seat of an '01. besides, they have a high failure rate. _________________ silly girls, trucks are for boys!

You are correct. The baselink is too large to fit. Due to the size limitations I'm almost thinking of going to an 8 inch sub, in a small custom box, with a separate amp, something like 200 by 1 with internal crossovers.
Any ideas? Thanks!

| Depending on the manufactures is how the speaker size reads. One will say 5x7 and another will say 6x8. They are the same speaker and are a direct fit in the doors. All are equal.
If you get an 8" sub I think you will regreat it. Go with two of them. Or a single 10". I have a single 10" and I am happy with it. If I had an 8" I think I would wonder why I went through all of the trouble to power it and wire it up for something that doesn't really do a great job.
Like KingEvil says though, stay away from the junk stuff. My 10" kicker is powered by a 40w amp bridged to a single channel and I can't even turn the gain up all the way. Oh, the amp is an old punch. I have pics in my gallery. The reason I suggest having two 8" subs is because that what my Mustang has in the doors. I believe that is what they are. It's not earth shattering by any means, but it helps to round out the sound.
Good luck. |

| Thanks for the post. I was looking around super crew sound and I found a single 10 inch box that will fit underneath the seats without having to lift them. Looking more and more like that will be the route I take.
I have a stripped down 1995 5.0 mustang. The audio stayed stock, but the engine didn't. This is the first time I've done an audio system, and I appreciate the replies!

Just to bring some closure:
I ordered the custom box from supercrew sound to mount a 10 inch sub. I found a shallow mount pioneer unit, 250 watts @ 4ohms, and matched that with a kicker amp, 200 watts @ 4ohms. My head unit is of course at 4 ohms. The amp and the sub arrived today, the box should arrive early next week. I'm going to pick up a wiring kit for 30 bones at radioshack. Total cost to me: 460 dollars. Total estimated cost for Best Buy to do the install: 1000+tax.
I can't say enough about supercrewsound.com. Delivery was prompt and when I called I actually spoke to a human. Prices were outstanding and I was able to meet my goal of 500 bucks for the whole deal. The box even matches my carpet interior!
I'm going to do the install with a couple friends who have lots of experience. I'm an electrical engineer myself so between the three of us this should take a couple hours and a 30 pack.
Next up is to replace the 4 door speakers, that should be easy though. I'm going to try and take pics to document the entire project from start to finish.

| sounds like a cool setup. mounting depth is always tough without a seat lift. installation shouldn't be too hard, just make sure you have a nice clean area for the ground. _________________ silly girls, trucks are for boys!
