A 4-cylinder F-150? Whaaaat?

I know, I know, you see the headline and think there must be a mistake. A four cylinder engine in an F-150? That’s crazy talk. Well, until recently that was a crazy idea.

With gas prices as high as they are and truck sales so low, it’s maybe not such a crazy idea after all. Derrick Kuzak, the Vice President of Product Management from Ford has said “it’s a potential”.

If Ford does offer a four-cylinder engine, it would most likely would be an EcoBoost engine (turbocharged with direct injection). It’s projected the engine would be offered in 2013.

Ford has already acknowledged that they are working on and plan to produce a diesel F-150. Heck, there’s also talk of a new F-100 truck (a bit smaller than the F-150). And the Ford Ranger plant that was scheduled to close multiple times now just might stay open for a few more years.

I think it’s a good idea. I think it’s dumb with the 2009 F-150 only coming with V8’s with todays gas prices we should come out with a v6. With a full sized F-150 with a 4 cylinder turbo. It’s not going to have a ton of power but it’s going to go. And it will have good gasmilage. But I think Ford might go out in 2010. Since the Rapter is coming in supercharged V8.

I also think Mustang should do this. Go with the power and gasmilage and in between. Have a 4 cylinder maybe with a turbo. V6, and a V8.

This is just not right. if you want a truck with a 4cyl, go buy a nissan, etc.

  5. Chris Says:

I’ll take an inline 6 any day over a V6. Make mine a diesel, and give us a turbo-6 for the Super Duty.

  6. Ed Says:

I think its a great idea but manufacturing costs would bring the prices up. Also most turbo 4 cylinders require premium grade fuel which offsets the return of running a 4 cylinder. To those who say, go buy a nissan…..just wrong! Lets go buy Import vehicles rather than diversify our products. This is part of the reason our auto makers are not doing well, they are loosing the job market.

how come ford cant build a turbo225 inline six

NOT TO MANY [TO ME] DECADES AGO, PICKUP TRUCKS BELTED OUT 100 OR LESS HORSEPOWER.
THEN, FEW COMPLAINED THESE TRUCKS LOADED DID NOT ROMP DOWN A FREEWAY WITHOUT STRESS; ABLE TO GO BETWEEN POINTS A AND B SMOOTHLY.
TODAY, FORD SMART AND TOUGH 4 BANGERS [WITHOUT TURBLOW] DEVELOP FAR MORE THAN 100 HP.
THIS, COMBINED WITH A VARIABLE OR 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION, WILL GIVE GOOD GRUNT WHEN STARTING ALONG WITH RELAXED CRUSEING.
THE OWNER’S PAYOFF WILL BE; LESS FUEL BURNED DURING RED LIGHTS AND PART THROTTLE ROLLING [MOST OF THE TIME] OPERATION ~ A FORD JOB WELL DONE ~ MORE MONEY LEFT IN THE WALLET.
NO, THIS WOULD NOT BE A TRUCK FOR THE DRAGSTRIP, RATHER FOR GETTING JOBS DONE.
PLEASE RETAIL THIS BEFORE THOSE OVER THE PONDS DO.
    REGARDS, CARL
    end
