Ford F150 Gear Shift Indicator Adjustment

Is your shift indicator showing you're in Reverse when you're actually in Park? Is the indicator off just a bit and it's annoying? Well surprisingly, this is a pretty easy fix.

This article applies to 1997-2003 Ford trucks, it may also apply to other years.

You may need to remove trim panels and the plastic shroud around the steering column. Look on the right side of the steering column for the white plastic piece with the black wheel on it. There's a purple wire going up. That black wheel is an adjustment wheel. Simply turn the wheel to move the shift indicator.

Update
Thanks for posting this article. I used it today to adjust the indicator on my 2002 F150. I did not need to remove any of the dash panels or the steering column shroud. It was accessible from under the dash.

I had to replace the white plastic piece in my 02 F150. I just used one from the E series van, around the 99 year model. It was shaped a little differently, but works great.

Thanks.. Went to trade in the truck & Ford wanted to discount the trade by 2500 b/c the indicator was off. I was able to readjust in 2 minutes without removing the covers..

I know how to do the adjustment, where is the other end of the wire attached?

The white plastic that holds the adjusting wheel may be broken not allowing the wheel to adjust properly, if this is the case you can hook a spring around the cable attached to it and stretch the cable downward hooking the spring to the metal trim plate bracket directly under the cable.

this will pull the cable tight and properly align the indicator.

If needed you can then superglue the black cable plastic into the adjuster, but any more adjustment would not be able to be made.

Thank You!
Got a quote from local shop to fix: $170.

Saw this article, got part from local Ford dealer for $26.

It took about 30 minutes to fix. The picture was a HUGE help. I have a 2001 F150 SuperCrew with 120K miles. I haven't had many problems at all but the next time, I will check this website first. You saved me a lot of money. Again, thank you.
