What mods can I do to my truck that cost little or no money?

One question that keeps coming up is what can I do to my truck that costs little or no money, to get a bit more power.

Well, there's an old adage that says there's no such thing as a free lunch. And that holds true with trucks, too. So, this article attempts to provide some ideas and links to things you can do on a budget to get a little more power. Very few mods are free ;-) -- if you want real power, you'll have to spend some money.

  1. Remove the slack from your throttle cable for a little better throttle response (up to '03 trucks)
  2. Remove the air intake silencer
  3. Clean your Mass Airflow Sensor for a better running engine
  4. Gotts Intake Modification

Now if you've done those things, you'll have to think about spending some money on the popular mods like cat-back exhaust, cold air intake kits, programmers/tuners, etc.

We're always looking to add to this list. If you have something to contribute to the list, let us know by leaving a comment below. Thanks!

I've heard of doing an exhaust mod for more flow... though it makes your truck illegal for street use... take the exhaust apart and get the catalytic converter out and coming in one end drive a pole or pipe in it with a hammer or such to "knock the guts out of it". I personally wouldn't do it to my vehicle but i've heard you can get better exhaust flow and when you put it back together it looks the same as it did before. Once again i would never do this to any of my vehicles though because its just a rumor and tampering with the emissions could be a BIG mistake.

On Catalytic Concerters. DONT SUGGEST THIS IF YOU DONT DO IT YOUR SELF AS DUMMY SAYS. tHATS OLD SCHOOL. GET A LARGER CONVERTER AND PERFORMANCE MUFFLER.

ANOTHER WAY TO FREE UP HP AND GAS MILEAGE IS TO PUT A REMOTE OIL FILTER ON YOUR FRAME. GET IT FROM JEGS OR SUMMIT. ALOT CHAEPER THAN FORD. THEN PUT A RACING FILTER ON. THEY HAVE LARGER HOLES FOR MORE FLOW. LARGER HOLES IN FILTER MEANS LESS STRESS ON OIL PUMP, THUS FREEING UP HORSE POWER. WORKS ON RAC CARS, THEN WORKS ON STRRET TOO.

this article is about "little or no cost".... ofcoarse if you have the money buying an aftermarket exhaust system with a "high flow" catalytic converter and muffler is much better. Thats why i would never knock the guts out my catalytic converter... i wait and save money to do it the right way.... then again i also wouldn't take the silencer out of my intake like is also listed in this article... it's ofcoarse better to buy an aftermarket intake.
