Ford F150 Gear Shift Indicator Adjustment

Is your shift indicator showing you're in Reverse when you're actually in Park? Is the indicator off just a bit and it's annoying? Well surprisingly, this is a pretty easy fix.

This article applies to 1997-2003 Ford trucks, it may also apply to other years.

You may need to remove trim panels and the plastic shroud around the steering column. Look on the right side of the steering column for the white plastic piece with the black wheel on it. There's a purple wire going up. That black wheel is an adjustment wheel. Simply turn the wheel to move the shift indicator.

Update
Thanks for posting this article. I used it today to adjust the indicator on my 2002 F150. I did not need to remove any of the dash panels or the steering column shroud. It was accessible from under the dash.

I had to replace the white plastic piece in my 02 F150. I just used one from the E series van, around the 99 year model. It was shaped a little differently, but works great.

gearshift indicator repair
The white plastic that holds the adjusting wheel may be broken not allowing the wheel to adjust properly, if this is the case you can hook a spring around the cable attached to it and stretch the cable downward hooking the spring to the metal trim plate bracket directly under the cable.

this will pull the cable tight and properly align the indicator.

If needed you can then superglue the black cable plastic into the adjuster, but any more adjustment would not be able to be made.

Thank You!
Got a quote from local shop to fix: $170.

Saw this article, got part from local Ford dealer for $26.

It took about 30 minutes to fix. The picture was a HUGE help. I have a 2001 F150 SuperCrew with 120K miles. I haven't had many problems at all but the next time, I will check this website first. You saved me a lot of money. Again, thank you.

Shift indicator
THANKS A LOT, THIS REALLY HELPED ME. THE TOP PART OF THE BRACKET FOR THR ADJUSTMENT WHEEL WAS BROKEN BUT THE BOTTOM PART WAS STILL INTACT. SO I PUT TWO TY WRAPS AROUND THE THREADED SECTION OF THE CABLE HOUSING AND PULLED THE CABLE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE ADJUSTING WHEEL AND TIGHTENED THE TY WRAPS AND IT WORKS NOW LIKE NEW. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INFORMATION AND THE PHOTO. THIS IS A GREAT SITE.

Expedition, too
Same thing on 1999 Expedition - no covers in the way. My white holder / mount was broken, but I was able to manually pull the wire in tight and slip a small cable tie around it to hold it in place after a few minutes of fiddling. The wife and kids will be happy!

First time on this site and I found this article which covered just what I needed.
I have a 1999 Ford Expedition and had the same problem where from one day to the next the
gear indicator was shifted to the right. Following your instructions I found that the upper part of the white bracket was broken. The lower part was ok, so I pulled down on the adjusting wheel and used a tie wrap to bring the broken piece and the adjusting wheel in place. It took me a few minutes to get the tie wrap in place, but it worked. This was an anoying problem and I'm happy to have it fixed now.

Thanks for this info. I made the adjustment a few minutes ago on my F150- '02 model. I'm a big boy and I was able to get under there and make the adjustment without taking anything off. I just used my finger and a flashlight.

To save you a few steps:

First, when you have the gear in "park", take note of where the orange / red indicator sits.

Then get under the steering column and make note of which way you are turning the wheel. turn it several times (one way or the other, JUST REMEMBER WHICH WAY YOU TURN THE KNOB)

Then get up and see which direction the gear indicator is moving.

Now you can get back under neath and make adjustments either way. Just make sure you don't go to far one way or another.

Where does the cable that goes on up towards the dash attach to? The entire white bracket on my truck broke, and the wire loop on the end came off and the whole cable is just dangling around down in there and I don't really know where to hook it back up to. Any suggestions?

Adjustment works wonderfully without removing anything - easy when you have excellent instructions. THANKS!!!
