Throttle Cable Zip Tie Mod

Want better throttle response for about 25 cents? Well, with this mod you get better throttle response and it costs you less than a dollar! What we're doing here is taking the slack out of the throttle cable (on trucks with a cable -- note 2004-newer F-150's don't have a throttle cable).

Very simple modification to do and only takes about 10 min or so. There are several ways to do it; I would think the list is only held up by imagination. I have heard most use Zip-Ties, but you could use plastic tubing and hose clamps, or the ends of electrical connectors such as I did.

Ok first thing to do is select what you are going to use to hold it in place. Like I said before I cut the ends off of some cheap electrical connectors and spread them open to crimp around the cable.

Next you need to find a comfortable position on the floor looking up. P.S. There isn’t one. Once you get into position, pull up on the pedal to show the slack, and then pull on the cable to get all of the slack out and guess how much slack you have. I had just over an inch. I also placed a block under the pedal to hold it up, so I could use both hands. Which, I highly recommend.

Slack in the throttle cable

Next, start adding what ever it is your going to use. Since I used the block I was able to pull on cable end with pliers in one hand and crimp the connectors on with the other. Again, very uncomfortable for a big guy like me. I had to use 3 of the connectors, and still had a tiny bit of slack left, but just left it.

After this I put some liquid tape around all of it to hold it in place, and I guess make it look better even though I will probably be the only one looking under there.

Now I had those cheap pedal covers on, and had to take it off the gas pedal because it was too high now. But man what a big difference in throttle response. I barely touch it, and it wants to go. I am glad this was mentioned, because I have never heard of it, nor did I know there was any slack in the cable. Very cheap and quick way to get a little more response out of your truck, and I would imagine you could do it to just about any vehicle. Enjoy and good luck.

As always, do this at your own risk. I do not claim any responsibility for damage caused by doing this modification, except for my own truck of course, but I think it can only do good.

I feel semi-smart
WOW, I thought that I had simply jerry-rigged something, so it's good to hear somebody else did the same thing. I used lead fishing weights (one to two; depending on the amount of slack). I had a little more than usual because I put a throttle body spacer in. Thanks for the post.

Killer cool and very helpful
Thanks for the post - I was thinking of some type of rubber bushing, but hadn't come across anything suitable. Question: have you noticed any wear / chafing of the cable since you are using metal for your fix? I like the lead weights idea also.
Cool.
